About Us

What is Octopush?

Octopush is underwater hockey and it is a supreme aerobic sport. The game is played worldwide. Underwater hockey is fast, furious, fun and you can participate by joining our club: Ipswich Octopush Club. If you are interested in trying this sport, please contact our Treasurer, Ken Kirby (see below for details).

How do you play?

Players wear the basic equipment of a mask, snorkel, fins, and water polo hat. They hold a small stick in a gloved hand. The idea of the game is to use the stick to push the puck along the floor of the pool into the opposing team’s goal. We can provide all your basic equipment for your first few sessions (which are free) and we will teach you how to play the game. Ideally, you should already be familiar with snorkelling.

How many people play?

There are 10 people in a team, but only six are allowed in the water at one time. This results in fast substitutions. The idea is to work quickly, and then get out to recover. This increases the speed and exhilaration of the game.

Why should I learn?

Because it is fun, great for fitness and we are a very friendly club! Doctors agree that swimming is an excellent sport, but lane swimming is terminally boring. Underwater hockey, conversely, keeps your mind alert and your body fit! It is great exercise. Many tall people find that underwater hockey is the best way of avoiding back problems.

We offer dedicated sessions for juniors on Sunday mornings for children in the range 8 to 14 years old. We provide all the equipment for the sessions. If you are interested then please contact  Charlie Sims (see contact info).

We welcome anyone who can swim. Ideally, you should be familiar with snorkelling but we will train juniors to snorkel. It is easy to learn to use a mask and snorkel. Our members’ ages range from juniors (8 years old) to 70+ years old and we play mixed (ladies and guys) games.
